Space as Void is an exercise in exploration of the idea of space. In the project, space is defined as void—or absence/emptiness—as it has been created through the process of carving into a 12 meter x 12 meter x 6 meter cuboid. This project tests the boundaries of spatial configurations by exploring some of the few different ways in which spaces—or rooms—can be differentiated or created in an architectural project. The most dominant of these ways is the act of defining a space by obstructing it through the use of solid blocks, which further directs the inhabitant in the realm of phenomenology of an architectural design
Space as void
Re-envisioning the theoretical space, the plan on the left shows a hypothetical scenario of a public space embedded in a park or a pedestrian district. Like a work of Installation Art, the structure plays with the idea of creating experiences by defining open spaces using partition walls instead of stricter partitions such as doors. Through the creation of narrow as well as breathing spaces, the “public space” has distinct day and night lives, with the wider spaces providing a space for leisure for adults as well as children, and walls free to be graffittied on to promote creative classes. The narrow spaces provide an interesting directional path through the use of modern string light fixtures and installation of light art.
